PeoplePartners Case Study: HR Review and Process Implementation

Davis Funeral Homes

Client Need

Having grown rapidly over the past two years, Davis Funeral Homes, a family owned business, recognised the need to invest in their people processes and systems.  Some of the issues being experienced as a result of this growth included:

  • Regular performance issues with a small number of employees resulting in a noticeable impact on the morale of other well performing employees
  • A significant proportion of the Company Directors' time being spent fire-fighting and undertaking time consuming operational activities
  • A lack of clarity over reporting lines, responsibilities and performance expectations
  • Significant investments being made by the company to support and develop employees with little return for their investment
  • A sense of frustration with the frequency of issues arising as a result of a lack of documented processes

Solution

Our first step was to undertake an HR review and climate survey.  Using the information obtained, we worked with the Company Directors to develop an HR strategy for the business.  Our next step involved facilitating workshops with employees to identify and clearly articulate the company's values.  The values were important as they underpinned many of the employees issues that the company were experiencing and would be woven into the subsequent people processes and systems developed.  Meetings were then held with employees and job descriptions were created for all roles, having identified the competencies required for successful performance.  Our final initiative was to develop and implement a performance management system, complemented by the development of best practice recruitment, induction, reward and exit processes.

Outcome

Employees performance issues have significantly reduced and employees have commented that they are able to see the values of the company being reinforced and recognised in the people processes that were developed.
